Crossroads Tours Statement
Crossroads Tours is a non-profit organization designed in 1999 to facilitate and support scholars in academic research primarily in the fields of theology, classics and archaeology (within Asia Minor).
Tours are organized according to the specialized interests of particular scholars in order to provide them an occasion to gain experiential knowledge of the sites they are intimate with through literature. Itineraries of the tours are custom-made to fit their interests and study. By recruiting 6 participants, the scholar is given full land-only expenses of the trip for one person. As leader of the tour, the scholar conducts visits of the sites with the help of an experienced guide, offers lectures, and lead discussions. These lectures and discussions may take place during a bus or a boat trip, on the site, or around the dinner table. In this way, the participants are not only exposed to the most recent scholarship of a certain subject, but they share the excitement of scholars placing academic scholarship into its geographical home. Imagine a scholar, for example, who after studying an inscription carved on stone somewhere at the other end of the world, is able to observe it closely within its surroundings.
Collaborations between scholars are highly encouraged and have resulted in publications as well as 2 major ongoing archaeological projects: the Pepouza Proect which seeks to identify and excavate the Pepouza, the long lost center of the early Christian movement of Montanisim, as well as the Troas Project, which seeks to clarify the land and maritime routes of the Troad area during the Roman period in order to shed light on the complex social history of the area. The other form of support for scholarly research comes from the small amount of profit made from each tour which is donated to the ongoing projects. Participants are welcome to join the circle of friends of these projects and can offer tax deductible donations. They can also contribute to this network of support by spreading the word concerning these discoveries. Participants will have a chance to continue to be involved in later phases of the projects if they wish and if the project’s nature allows.
